Artist statement

I like to define my work as surreal abstract figuration.

I begin each piece with a combination of surrealist psychic automatism, decalcomania and abstract expressionist pouring and dripping techniques. Through these initial processes I suppress conscious control, allowing the subconscious mind and chance to reveal hidden worlds and stories. Subsequently, I shape and give depth to the emerging forms, enabling their unique identities to manifest. Through the process of observation, layering, and meticulous detailing using paint or digital mediums, memories and sensations are evoked within me and I further explore and develop a narrative for the piece.

Being an Italian South African, my artistic perspective has been shaped by the fusion of Western and African art and cultures and the diverse natural environments that surrounded me. I am particularly fascinated by the structures in nature, which seem to follow similar patterns when viewed at different scales. For instance, the branching of trees shares similarities with the nervous system or aerial shots of rivers. In my work I imagine that what I am depicting may be interpreted differently by each viewer; to some it may resemble a landscape while to others it might evoke the depiction of a minute organism. I enjoy exploring this interplay between objects of varying scales.

Ultimately, my art is an ongoing exploration of the interaction between chance and intention, revealing a realm that exists between abstraction and figuration - an amalgamation of reality and imagination, inviting viewers to interpret it in their own way.

Me gusta definir mi trabajo como una figuración abstracta surrealista.

Comienzo cada pieza con una combinación de automatismo psíquico surrealista, decalcomanía y técnicas abstractas de vertido y dripping. A través de estos procesos iniciales, suprimo el control consciente, permitiendo que la mente subconsciente y el azar revelen mundos ocultos e historias. Posteriormente, doy forma y profundidad a las formas emergentes, permitiendo que sus identidades únicas se manifiesten. A través del proceso de observación, capas y detalles meticulosos utilizando pintura o medios digitales, se evocan recuerdos y sensaciones en mí y profundizo en la exploración y desarrollo de una narrativa para la obra.

Siendo ítalo-sudafricano, mi perspectiva artística ha sido moldeada por la fusión del arte y las culturas occidentales y africanas, así como los diversos entornos naturales que me rodearon. Me fascinan especialmente las estructuras en la naturaleza, que parecen seguir patrones similares cuando se observan a diferentes escalas. Por ejemplo, la ramificación de los árboles comparte similitudes con el sistema nervioso o tomas aéreas de ríos. En mi trabajo, imagino que lo que estoy representando puede ser interpretado de manera diferente por cada espectador; para algunos puede parecer un paisaje, mientras que para otros podría evocar la representación de un organismo diminuto. Disfruto explorando esta interacción entre objetos de diferentes escalas.

En última instancia, mi arte es una búsqueda continua de la interacción entre el azar y la intención, revelando un ámbito que existe entre la abstracción y la figuración: una amalgama de realidad e imaginación, invitando a los espectadores a interpretarlo a su manera.
